Martha L. Tuvell of Chillicothe, passed from this life on Tuesday July 11, 2023 at the age of 95. She was born Dec. 2, 1927 in Ross County to the late William W. and Evelyn L. Collins Handley. On Nov. 23, 1951 she was married to Robert. W. Tuvell, who preceded her in death on Aug. 13, 2008.
Martha graduated from Huntington Local High School in 1945 and was a member of the 1949 class at Capital University in Columbus, Ohio with a degree in Elementary Education. She also attended Ohio University in Chillicothe.
She was a teacher in the Liberty Fractional School District in Ross County and taught 1st grade in the Huntington Local Elementary School for 16 years.
She loved working with children and taught the Kindergarten Sunday School class at Trinity United Methodist Church for 51 years. She was also the Children’s Education Coordinator, directed Vacation Bible School for many years, and served on the Education Committee in the Portsmouth District of the United Methodist Church.
She was a long time active member of Trinity United Methodist Church and served on many committees including the United Methodist Women and the Karen Vo Circle.
Surviving are her nephews, D. William (Lee Etta) Shoemaker, Sevierville, TN, Keith Tuvell and Brian ( Susan) Tuvell, Suffolk, VA, nieces, Deborah Miller and Tammy (David) Hirsch, Wheaton, IL, great nephews, Dan Shoemaker, Jonathan Arehart, Ryan Creamer, Joseph Tuvell, and Henry Hirsch, great nieces, Jessica (Matthew) Hemsley, Melanie Arehart, Lucienne Hirsch, Caroline Hirsch, great-great niece Chelsea Shoemaker, special friend, Mary Beth Gallaher, special cousin, Sue Hammond, and many other cousins and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, 3 sisters, Melanie Creamer, Jeannine Shoemaker, and Carol Shaffer, a brother, William W. Handley, Jr., a nephew Christopher Creamer, and a sister-in-law, Leanna Martin.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m., Saturday July 15, 2023 in the FAWCETT OLIVER GLASS AND PALMER FUNERAL HOME with Pastor Wes Souders, officiating. Burial will follow in Greenlawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral from 11:00 a.m. until the hour of service on Saturday. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to Trinity United Methodist Church Memorial Fund, 24 S. Mulberry St., Chillicothe, OH 45601.
