Otis G. Adkins

Otis G. Adkins, 88, of Chillicothe, passed from this life on Saturday, Feb. 26, 2011 in the Adena Regional Medical Center. He was born Aug. 24, 1922 in Vinton County, the son of William and Rosa E. (Parker) Adkins. On Jan. 15, 1947 he married Thelda M. Nehrenz who preceded him in death June 17, 1997. Surviving is a daughter, Louella Kerns and a son and daughter-in-law, Buddy L. and Judy C. Adkins, all of Chillicothe, grandchildren, Craig and wife, Melissa Kerns, Jason and wife, Michelle Barber and Marinda and husband, Brent Stauffer, great-grandchildren, Reece and Davis Kerns and several other step great-grandchildren, a sister-in-law, Donna Adkins, Chillicothe and several nieces and nephews. His parents, a son-in-law, Brad Kerns and brothers Ralph, Glenn and Harvey Adkins preceded him in death. Mr. Adkins was a US Navy veteran, serving in WW II on board the LCI 969 in the Asiatic-Pacific Theatre and participated in the capture and occupation of Morotai on Sept. 15, 1944. He was an employee of the B and O / Chessie System Railroad with 41 years of service, retiring in 1982. Many in the community will remember him from his evening job as projectionist at the Fiesta Drive Inn Theatre. He was a member of Calvary Lutheran Church and served as the original Scoutmaster for Troop 17 at the church. He was an avid bowler and was an able assistant to his wife in her cake baking service, doing delivery and set up for many years. In his later years, he had two faithful canine companions and called them both "Pat". He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather and will be missed by his family. A private military graveside service will be held at the discretion of the family. Calling hours will not be observed. The FAWCETT OLIVER GLASS AND PALMER FUNERAL HOME is serving the family.
