John Wayne McGarvey, 74, of Winter Haven, FL, formerly of Chillicothe, passed from this life on Dec. 9, 2011 while in Auburndale, FL hospice. He was born July 17, 1937 to John William and Ethel (Bennett) McGarvey.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, serving as an MP and during the Korean Conflict. He lived in the Chillicothe area intermittently over the years and had been employed by Litter Distributing, CCI and the former Mead Paper-Lancaster Road facility. He helped to set up many mobile and modular homes in the area during the 1970’s. He had retired from the State of Maine in Bangor, ME.
Surviving is his sister, Carla and aunts, Geneva (Charles) and Margaret (James), all of Chillicothe. Also surviving are many cousins, including Jimmie Dale and Margie, Lois and Larry, Ralph Cooper, Karen, Steve and Mike, Rita, Annie, Rhonda, Randy, Carl and David, Sharon, Trudy, Geney and Danny and his Virginia cousins, Jo, Blanche and Frances.
He was preceded in death by his parents, including his beloved step-mother, Edna McGarvey, dear grandmother, Nellie McGarvey; uncles, James, Gene, Dale, Charles and Jack McGarvey; aunt, Nellie Hughes and by his best friend and business partner of over 50 years, Leon Conary.
Johnny loved all animals and is survived by his loyal canine companion, Lulu. He enjoyed renovating old houses, traveling and his rose garden. A talented musician, he played the piano and organ by ear. He attended the Winter Haven Beymer Memorial United Methodist Church.
Surviving him in Winter Haven are long time friends, Richard and Mary Parker, Wayne and Dolly Conary and Dennis Moore. The family wishes to thank them, along with his other friends and neighbors in Oakwood, as well as Norman Withee in Bangor, ME for their love and support during Johnny’s illness and death from lung cancer. Following cremation, he was interred in Pine Grove Cemetery, Bangor, ME on May 12, 2012.
