James M. Patton

James Mercer Patton, 83, of Chillicothe, unexpectedly passed from this life early Sunday morning, Mar. 22, 2009 at his home. He was born Oct. 27, 1925 in Highland County, the son of James C. and Maxine (Mercer) Patton. On June 15, 1952 he married Joanne Hoffman who survives. Also surviving is a son, Thomas Edward Patton, Chillicothe, a granddaughter, Courtney Patton Keeler and husband, Ian, Indianapolis, IN, a grandson, Robert Dennison Patton, West Chester, OH, a daughter-in-law, Jennifer Patton, West Chester, OH, 2 step-grandchildren, a step-great grandson, a sister, Kay Cooksey and husband, Jim, Orlando, FL, twin brothers, John L.Patton and wife, Dr. Mary Lou, Media, PA and Jerry L. Patton and wife, Mary, Brecksville, OH, a sister-in-law, Carolyn Hoffman, Ft. Wayne, IN and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his son, James Robert Patton on Aug. 28, 2006, a sister, Rosemary Patton Roush on June 14, 2006 and a brother-in-law, Gene Hoffman, June 2, 1998. Jim was a 1943 graduate of Hillsboro High School. Following graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and attended Notre Dame as part of his training. He later served in the Pacific Theatre aboard the aircraft carrier USS Shamrock Bay (CVE 84) In addition to his naval service; he proudly served in the National Guard and the Naval Reserve for 24 years. An employee of Mead Paper, Jim retired in 1989 with 37 years of service. He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, the Mead Retirees Club, the United Commercial Travelers and the Ross County Senior Citizens. A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 am Thursday, Mar. 26, 2009 in the Fawcett Oliver Glass and Palmer Funeral Home with Rev. Tad Grover officiating. Military honors will be conducted by the Ross County Veterans Honor Guard. Following cremation, interment will be held at the discretion of the family. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Lung Association, 1950 Arlingate Dr., Columbus, OH 43228-4102.
