Harold Stout, 90, of Chillicothe died 3:30 a.m. Monday, May 27, 2013, in the Adena Regional Medical Center, following a brief illness. He was born July 18, 1922, in Chillicothe to the late Grover C. and Celora Williams Stout. On October 30, 1941, he married Virginia Rose Thompson who preceded him in death on April 15, 2013.
Surviving are children, Gary (Janet) Stout of Canton, Georgia; Tom (Rita) Stout of Louisville, Kentucky; Nancy Harris and Joyce Graves both of Chillicothe; grandchildren, Michele Peacock, Mark (Denise) Stout, T. Andrew Stout, Angela (Jimmy) White, Christopher Harris, Theresa Graves, Richard Graves, and Tracy (Greg) Robinson; great grandchildren, Mason, Kaitlyn, Madison, Garrett, Halle, Casey, Lyric, Gabrielle, Nathan, Jordan, Jacob, Matthew, Wesley, Jordon, Josh, Morgan, and Scott, a great-great granddaughter Amauri, former daughter in law, Margee Stout, and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his “bride”, Virginia, Harold was predeceased by brothers and sisters-in-law, George (Marjorie) Stout, Howard (Virginia C.) Stout, and sisters and brothers-in-law Ruth (Donald) Barney, Agnes (Earl) Thacker, Bernice Stout, brother-in-law and sister-in-law Charles and Coletta Thompson, and grandson Scott Beeler.
Harold was a 1940 graduate of Chillicothe High School. He was president of this class and played in the basketball and baseball programs. He was a WWII Army veteran and was stationed in Japan. Harold worked for Mead Paper Mill and played on their baseball team for many years as a young man. He also refereed basketball. He retired in December 1976 from the Federal Prison System, having worked at the federal prisons in Chillicothe, Ohio, McNeil Island, Washington, El Reno, Oklahoma, Marion, Illinois, and Milan, Michigan. After retirement, he worked at RCA in Circleville and taught briefly at Pickaway Ross Joint Vocational School.
He and Virginia loved to travel and spend time with their family. Harold enjoyed golfing, playing bridge, watching Cincinnati Reds baseball and college football. He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, American Legion Post 62, and former member of United Commercial Travelers and Kiwanis Club.
Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. Friday, May 31, 2013 in the FAWCETT OLIVER GLASS AND PALMER FUNERAL HOME with Rev. Kurt King officiating. Burial will follow in St. Margaret Cemetery with military graveside rites by the Ross County Veterans Honor Guard. Friends may call at the funeral home from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Thursday.
