Ethel M. Smith, 83, of Mount Gilead, OH, passed from this life 12:14 PM, Wednesday, October 30, 2013 at her residence following a brief illness.

She was born August 19, 1930 in Hartford, CT, the daughter of Richard R. and Ula G. Carter Grenfell. On August 29, 1952, she married Harvey M. Smith who survives.

Also surviving are a son Richard Smith, New Bern, NC, son and daughter in law Bob and Sue Smith, Chillicothe, a special daughter Sue “Soupy” Criswell, Mt. Gilead, grandchildren Janet Lynn Smith, James Travis Smith,  Melissa ( Chad Roll) Greenwood, Cain (Deidre Taylor) Smith and Kevin Smith, great grandchildren Isabella Petry, Jacob Petry,  Jordan Demarco, Kennedy Smith, Atlantis Smith and Clayton Smith, one sister Alta Fourman, Arcanum, OH and many special nieces, nephews and other extended family. Her parents and one brother, I.C. Mason preceded her in death.

Mrs. Smith was retired from the Morrow County Auditor’s Office where she worked as payroll clerk. She also worked as an operator for United Telephone Company.  She attended many churches in the community including the Mt. Gilead Baptist Church, Edison United Methodist Church, and Williamsport United Methodist Church, and was always willing to share her musical talent by playing the piano for worship services.  In support of her husband, she was a member of AMVETS Ladies Auxiliary, Morrow County Antique Tractor Association, and the Morrow County Beekeepers Association.
Ethel volunteered countless hours in the community.  She was a Den Mother when Richard and Bob were in Cub Scouts, assisting Harvey in many ways when he was Scoutmaster of Troop 56. She volunteered her time to the Morrow County Chapter of the American Red Cross, the Morrow Health Department, Meals on Wheels, and the Morrow County Hospital.

Having grown up in the New England area, she soon learned how to cook, garden, and the rural lifestyle under the patient training of her mothers in law Jane Smith and Ida Smith, and her sisters in law, Mae Smith, Dorothy Smith Hartley, Rachel Gilbert, Darlene Miller and Diane May.

Funeral Services will be held 11:00 am Monday, November 4, 2013 in the Craven-Snyder Funeral Chapel with Chaplin Dave Matos officiating.  Burial will follow in Rivercliff Union Cemetery. The family will receive friends, at the funeral home, from 2-5 PM Sunday. A Memorial service will be conducted by the American Legion Womens Auxiliary Post 97 at 5PM Sunday.
