Clarence Rittinger

February 22, 1925 — November 18, 2008

Clarence Rittinger, Jr., 83, of Chillicothe, unexpectedly passed from this life Tuesday morning, Nov. 18, 2008 in Adena Regional Medical Center. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am Saturday, Nov. 22, 2008 in the Fawcett Oliver Glass and Palmer Funeral Home with Rev. Ronald W. Botts officiating. Burial will follow in Grandview Cemetery with military rites by the Ross County Veterans Honor Guard. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 5:00 to 8:00 pm on Friday. He was born Feb. 22, 1925 in Ross County, the son of Clarence W. and Ethel (Hatmaker) Rittinger. On Sept. 4, 1948 he married his wife of 60 years, Ruth J. Suman who survives. Also surviving are sons, William and his wife, Kathy Rittinger, Chillicothe and Thomas Rittinger, Beaver Creek, OH, his former daughter-in-law, Sharon Rittinger, Fairborn, OH, grandchildren, Brian, Greg, Cynthia and Scott, great-grandchildren, Joshua, Kaitlyn, Olivia and Colten, and a brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Maxine Rittinger, Chillicothe. His parents, 2 sisters and 4 brothers preceded him in death. Mr. Rittinger was a graduate of Chillicothe High School. He was an employee of Adena Health System, retiring in 1988, a member of the Orchard Hill United Church of Christ, the Ross Co. Genealogical Society, the Ross Co. Historical Society and the Ross Co. Conservation League. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving in WW II on the USS West Virginia (BB-48) in the Pacific Theatre. He was a 50 year member of the American Legion Post 62 and the USS West Virginia Association. He will be remembered as a loving husband, father and grandfather. He was devoted to his family and his country. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Orchard Hill United Church of Christ, 105 Courtland Dr., Chillicothe, OH 45601 or the Christopher Allen Rearley Scholarship Fund, payable to the ASU Foundation and sent to Mina Hernandez, Administrator, Arizona State University College of Public Programs, Mail Code 3520, 411 N. Central Ave., Suite 60, Phoenix, AZ 85004-0685.
