Alice M. Murphy

Alice M. Murphy, 93, of Chillicothe, passed from this life Wednesday morning, Jan. 13, 2010 in Adena Regional Medical Center. She was born Aug. 24, 1916 in Jackson County, the daughter of Charles L. and Nellie Leota (Shear) Mapes. She was married in 1934 to Charles Oscar McCormick who preceded her in death in 1938. On Feb. 2, 1941 she married Robert L. Murphy who preceded her in death Sept. 15, 1997. Surviving are her sons, Charles J. and wife, Mary McCormick, Lexington, KY and Robert L. McCormick, Chillicothe, grandchildren, Abigail and husband, Stan Harris, Bill McCormick, Jackie and husband, Roger Van Gundy, Rick Hamilton, Vickie Bushatz, Teresa Downs and Kathleen and husband, Jody Gragg, 9 great-grandchildren, 17 great-great-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews and her caregiver, Victoria Mapes. Her parents, a daughter-in-law, Barbara McCormick, a sister, June Mapes and a brother, Bill Mapes preceded her in death. Mrs. Murphy was a long-time cook for Islaly's Deli and later, Fisher's Deli in Chillicothe. She was also an employee of U.S. Shoe Corporation. She was a member of Tabernacle Baptist Church for more than 50 years and was also a member of McGregor Baptist Church in Ft. Myers, FL. A member of the Story Place Garden Club, she loved birds, gardening and flowers. Together with her husband Robert, she was a world traveler and always had a story to tell about her adventures. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am Saturday, Jan. 16, 2010 in the Fawcett Oliver Glass and Palmer Funeral Home with Rev. Robert Melton officiating. Burial will follow in Greenfield Cemetery, Greenfield, OH. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6:00 to 8:00 pm on Friday. Memorial contributions may be made to Tabernacle Baptist Church.
