William R. Jarvis, 82, of Chillicothe, passed away 10:05 PM, Sunday, November 27, 2016 due to natural causes in Adena Regional Medical Center.

Bill was born in Canton, Ohio on February 15, 1934. He graduated from Canton Lincoln High School and continued on to receive a Bachelor’s Degree in Education at The Ohio State University in 1957. Prior to attending Ohio State, Bill played college football at Bowling Green State University (1952-1954) before his career came to an early end due to a knee injury suffered in the Toledo Glass Bowl.

Bill was married to Mary Ann Winters on January 7, 1956; they were married 60 years, and were fortunate to have celebrated this occasion with family and friends this summer

In addition to his wife, Mary Ann, he is survived by his children, Steve (Coreen) Jarvis, Kathy (Terry) Brooks and Scott (Marisa) Jarvis. Bill was fortunate to have 5 grandchildren, Jennifer (Travis) Ross, Jessica (Mike) Coakley, Matthew (Crystal) Brooks, Robert Jarvis and Reid Jarvis. He was exceptionally proud to have been blessed with four great-grandchildren: Kaitlynn and Ethan Ross and Alexis and Cole Brooks. He is survived by a special brother-in-law, Dan (Jean) Winters who was Bill’s service manager at the Volkswagen dealer.  Also surviving are multiple nieces and nephews. In addition, he was the official “petter” of numerous grand dogs and grand cats over the years, a task he thoroughly enjoyed.

Bill is preceded in death by his parents, William G. and Mary M. Jarvis; his brother, Richard J. Jarvis; a very special Uncle and Aunt – Gust and Marie Jarvis and one nephew.

Bill served his country in the U.S. Army through the ROTC during his college years, eventually going Active Duty/Active Reserve until 1965, achieving the rank of Captain prior to receiving his Honorable Discharge.

Bill worked as an automobile salesman for Volkswagen in 1956 in Columbus, Ohio. His salesmanship led to the offer of starting a franchise in Chillicothe, Ohio in 1962. Originally doing business as Jarvis Motors, the name was changed to Volkswagen of Chillicothe. He remained as owner/operator until 1978. He remained in the car business until 1981 when he joined Pickaway-Ross Joint Vocational School, ultimately becoming the Adult Education Director until his retirement in 1999.  Bill was an avid and skilled woodworker and cabinet maker. He also was a contractor, building homes and doing remodeling for Wills-Jarvis Builders and Moundbuilders.  He enjoyed sports, particularly Ohio State football. He loved hunting, playing cards and spending time with his family. He was also actively involved in his churches, both First Presbyterian Church and Tyler Memorial United Methodist Church, serving as an Elder, Sunday School teacher, Deacon, Trustee and other committees. Over the many years, Bill also served with numerous service clubs and other groups.
